Self Storage facilities, such as ours, are secure, accessable and private. It’s quite common for people to store things that they don’t want laying around their house, often for other reasons than just needing space. Following marriage many men (sometimes women, but its usually the men) suddenly find that their prized collection of African drums, or their guitar collection, or their collection of magazines featuring ladies who aren’t shy and wearing very little, have no place in the new shared house. That’s when they get put into storage. There have however been many well documented cases of very strange items being found in self storage lockers.
1) Dead People!
It’s getting quite common for urns containing the ashes of departed loved ones to be put into storage lockers, but in Florida the actual body of a person was discovered! The self storage facility wrote to the owners of the locker saying that unless they paid the rent that they were behind on, then the contents of the locker would be auctioned off. The family responded stating that they couldn’t auction the contents, because it included the body of their grandmother, inside a blue casket, that had been there for the past 17 years!
2) Dead Pets
In another locker the owner had stored the stuffed body of their pet Golden Retriever – remarriage had forced the owner to put the beloved object into storage!
3) Live Hand Grenade
A Michigan man found a live hand grenade left behind by the previous owner. He called the police and the bomb squad was despatched to detonate the grenade which was strapped to a pack of C4!
4) A Dalek
A full size Dalek was stored at one facility, and the owner used to regularly surprise and startle other people at the unit by riding around in it.
5) Knight Rider Car
Cars are often stored in self storage facilities, alongside boats, bikes, caravans etc. The owners of one such place were very surprised one day when someone brought in a KITT replica for storage.
6) 250 unreleased Michael Jackson songs
One lucky owner who took over a unit in the USA, found 250 previously unreleased Michael Jackson songs. The unit had previously been owned by Joseph Jackson, Michaels father.
7) A storage unit owned by Burt Reynolds was found to contain the canoe from the fim Deliverance. Burt collects props from films he has starred in, which is probably why he needs storage!
Whats the strangest thing you’ve ever put into storage?
