Here are seven things in your closet that you should consider giving away.
- Winter coats
If you have winter coats in your closet that you’ve outgrown or just don’t wear anymore, consider donating them this holiday season. Help everyone in need keep warm as the temperatures begin to drop. Coat drives can be found all over the nation, but if you need help finding a drop off location near you, try calling your local council.
- Hats, gloves, and scarves
There are 610,042 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States, according to the NAEH. During the winter months, it can be especially rough for those spending nights outside. Donate extra hats, gloves, and scarves you have in your closet so those in need can keep warm.
- Boots and shoes
Aside from winter coats, other items in high demand during the cold months are boots and shoes, which are essential for safely trekking in snow, rain, and brisk temperatures. Some charities even accept sock donations.
- Blankets
Have an old or extra blanket in your closet you can spare? Several charities collect blankets for the homeless and families in need during the winter season. We all know the negative toll cold temperatures can take on our bodies. Something as simple as a blanket can help decrease chances of illness.
- Baby clothes.
According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, more than 16 million children in the America live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level, which is £17,000.00 for a family of four. Research shows these families need to earn two times that amount to cover basic essentials. Help children in need by donating baby and childrens clothing that your kids do not need anymore.
- Child care supplies.
Because there are so many children who live without basic necessities, some charities collect child care donations beyond clothing. Items that can be donated include crib sheets, towels, diaper bags, baby proofing items, and feeding supplies. If you’re looking for an organization to donate these items to, check out Room to Grow.
- Toys and books
The holiday season is a peak time for toy buying, but there may be quite a collection already cluttering your home. If there are toys or books hiding in the back of your closet, take them out and donate them to those in need.
