A move to a new home or city can be one of the biggest changes in your life. There are a lot of terrifying and stress-inducing things about moving, but you don’t have to be afraid. Here’s a list of five of the scariest things about moving, and how to face them.
Packing Everything
For many people, the idea of packing up every single thing they own can cause panic. Items that have always had a place in your home will now have to be put into boxes and left in storage, or packed into the back of a moving truck. One simple solution is to go room by room while packing. If you break everything up into sections, it won’t seem so overwhelming. Start with rooms that aren’t as necessary to everyday life, like your home office, guest bedroom and basement, and work from there.
Organisation is something that can make or break a move. If you aren’t properly labeling your boxes, you’ll probably show up to your new home with kitchen utensils in your bathroom and clothes in your garage. The key is to label everything, and then label it again. Writing “living room” on one side of a box isn’t enough. You should detail everything in the box on the outside. Be sure to write on the top and the side of the box so the writing is never fully obstructed.
Breaking Valuables
You probably have a lot of items that have special meaning for you. Between family heirlooms, expensive gifts, and other things full of memories, keeping everything in prime condition can be difficult. You could consider hiring professional movers for your most precious belongings, or you could just spend a day focusing on those specific items. If you pack up valuables first, you’re less likely to accidentally break something in the hassle of packing everything else. Don’t forget the bubble wrap!
Facing the Unpacking
Unpacking can be even more stressful than packing. Whether you are downsizing or getting a larger place, the idea of going through a stressful day of moving only to have to unpack everything you own is tiring in itself. Hopefully, you’ll have followed the tips from numbers one and two, but if not, there is still a smart way to unpack everything. Open one box at a time, and take EVERYTHING out of the box. Give it a place in your new home, before you move on to the next box. Even if it’s a random collection of items, having one half-empty box before moving on to the next will make it even more difficult to finish unpacking.
Moving Somewhere New
The scariest thing about moving is the feeling of displacement when you arrive at your new home. You won’t be comfortable there yet, and you might not even know where the closest grocery store or pharmacy is. This fear is not one you can solve with a simple hack. It’s a lifestyle change, and that takes courage. Change can be scary, but if you don’t hold yourself back from new experiences, you may find that those are the best experiences of your life. Take the plunge! You’ll be glad you did.
