The decision to take the plunge and move to a new neighborhood, city, or state can be incredibly difficult. Aside from the logistics of moving – from packing and leaving things in storage, to hiring movers, to actually finding the perfect house – the emotional connection you have to your current home might stand in the way of your desire to try out a new location. But if you’re starting to feel that itch to pick up and try to live somewhere new, read on.
Here are a few signs that it’s time to bite the bullet and move to a new place:
- Are your things starting to outgrow your home?
If you’re starting to feel the walls close in on you in your current home, then you’ve probably already started to think about getting a new place. But who said your new house has to be in the same town as your current one? Branch out a little and go somewhere else. Since you have SO MUCH stuff, the easiest option is to rent a storage facility while you look for a new home. Keep what you need and store the things you love but use less often for the perfect future home you’ll find.
2. Hard times?
If you’ve fallen on hard times recently, you may find that it’s hard to bring yourself back. Maybe that’s because you’re constantly reminded of what’s been going wrong. Setting up in a new location may be one way to clean the slate and start fresh. If you’re tired of feeling the pressures of your current life, look into a new city. Somewhere where rent is cheaper, the weather is brighter, or a place where you can genuinely make a happier life for yourself are great places to start.
- Is your family situation changing?
Whether your kids have just moved out, or you’ve recently gotten married, changing family dynamics can play a huge role in deciding where to live. Downsizing in your retirement might mean that you should move south, or at least somewhere to avoid the snow and ice of the winter. Alternatively, if you’re thinking about having kids soon, moving somewhere with a great school system and a lot of other families might be your best bet.
- Are you on a path that you aren’t happy with?
When you look around at the life you’ve made for yourself, are you content? Do you love your job, your friendships, and even your relationship with yourself? If the answer to any of these is no, then some soul-searching may be in order. One of the best ways to get to know what you REALLY want is to take yourself out of your comfort zone. Try moving across the country to follow your dreams, make new friends, or just to take some time to figure out what makes you happy. Of all of the reasons to move, this one may be the most important, because while it’s never too late to find your bliss, you shouldn’t have to spend your days being unhappy. Put your items in storage and get moving!
No matter what your reason, moving somewhere new can be an incredibly exciting time. Adventure, positive change, and a new home to love all await you in your new location. Take the leap and see what you’ve been missing!
