Every New Year, one of the most popular resolutions is to finally get up and start cleaning out your home. Whether that means throwing away unnecessary items, giving away old clothes hiding in your closet, or storing items for the future that you might not have room for now, the task at hand can be daunting if not approached in the right way. Luckily, there are some easy ways to tackle the seemingly never-ending mess that has become your home… we might even say, they are fun!
- Set a timer.
Block off a set amount of time each day to start moving things out. It could be five minutes, it could be an hour. Regardless, you must spend the entire time going through your things, and you must do it every day. After a while, you’ll start to see a major difference. Not to mention, you’ll never get overwhelmed or bored because you only do a little bit each day.
- Break things up.
Section off your home (or even each room) for a really helpful step when organising. While every room in your house might need some declutter help, it’s even better to look at each space individually. That way, when you’ve finished one section, you’ll have a tangible success that can help you keep moving forward.
- Get four boxes.
To declutter, you must start at the beginning: Do you want to keep this item? If not, where should it go? By bringing four boxes into the room while you go through things – one for trash, donate, storage, and relocate in the home respectively – you’ll be able to clear things out at hyper speed. Then, when everything is gone, the things in the relocate box will have plenty of room. And don’t forget to recycle when you can!
- Clear out the closet.
In the United States, 21% of all clothes purchased are never worn. Think about how much space in the closet that wastes! Be honest with yourself about what you wear or don’t. Donate clothes you haven’t touched in months, and store important clothing items that you want to keep but don’t need in the house all of the time.
